Positive Thinking: A Buzz Word or A Reality?

When I first heard about the power of positive thinking, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. It seemed too simplistic to be true. How could something as basic as thinking positively make a real difference in my life? But as I delved deeper into the practice, I found that positive thinking is more than just a cliche or a buzzword—it's a transformative approach that can genuinely enhance our well-being. Today, I want to share my personal experience with positive thinking and how it has reshaped my outlook on life.

Positive Thinking Doesn't Mean Ignoring the Challenges

I ventured into positive thinking when I became more careful about my inner voice, particularly in situations that were stressing me. It struck me that I tended to think less of myself like for example it crossed my mind that “I can’t deal with this” or “I am not good enough,” making situations seem more daunting. This discovery was significant. That’s where I began my journey to having a positive mindset.

It is essential to note that at its core, positive thinking is focusing on what is good in every situation. It should be realized however that this does not mean ignoring life’s problems or acting like everything is perfect. Instead, it involves perceiving difficulties as opportunities while believing in ourselves and discovering a good side in even difficult times.

Catching The Negativity

I remember a particular day when everything seemed to go wrong. From the moment I woke up late, forgetting to give my son his lunch box, and taking the wrong route to the office, it felt like everyone was out there to get me. As I sat at my desk, I could feel the familiar pull of negativity starting to take over—thoughts like "Why does this always happen to me?" began to flood my mind.

That moment made me realize the importance of knowing what goes through your mind. It is like being a mental detective for your own thoughts. In stressful situations fears and doubts tend to multiply 10 times. The trick was catching myself at the right time—before these negative thoughts could spring up their roots and begin growing. By deliberately stopping and questioning these thoughts, I discovered that I could keep from falling into old self-destructive patterns. This wasn't always easy but awareness became a potent instrument in developing positivity and wellness in my life.

One Person with Multiple Roles

It's incredible to think about all the roles we play—parent, spouse, worker, friend—with so many expectations to meet. It is overwhelming, isn't it? You will start to feel better once you get into the habit of "catching" yourself when you start to spiral down the path of negative thinking. Here, I want to share some of the strategies I've used to navigate these roles successfully during such times.

As a Spouse: Now let's talk about marriage arguments in a marriage are inevitable but does that mean that Every time we end up in an argument we start thinking maybe we are not compatible, maybe we are not made for each other. So what is the other way of looking at it? Everybody is allowed to have their own perspective. It's not necessary just because I am his wife or he is my husband we need 100% agree on everything. We are allowed to speak our mind and have our own perspectives. It’s okay to have a healthy argument.

As a Corporate Worker:  Now how many of us really like being given negative feedback about the work that we have produced. There was a time that negative feedback about my work to me meant that the person was questioning my capability and that I was not good enough for this particular job or I am a misfit. As I started to become more aware of my thoughts, I realized this was self-sabotaging behavior. I decided to change my perspective and told myself, "This feedback is a valuable learning opportunity; I can use it to improve and grow." This change in mindset motivated me to look into additional resources and train myself better, seek help rather than sitting in a corner and trying to figure it all by myself.

To conclude, Positive thinking isn't about ignoring the negative; it's about choosing to focus on the positive aspects of life and believing in our capacity to grow and overcome challenges. Remember, there are two sides to everything, so why not focus on the positive side then!.
